Carvera 4th Axis Module Harmonic Drive — a rotary module for machining cylindrical and 3D parts, built around a harmonic reducer. The upgraded version of the earlier Carvera 4th-axis module supports homing and work coordinates. The operator sets up a 4-axis job as easily as a 3-axis one. With this module, the Carvera machine performs genuine simultaneous four-axis machining.

Key specs and benefits

  • Rotation accuracy: 0.01 ° — Fine carving details are reproduced consistently because the workpiece rotation angle is set with a small error.
  • Drive system: Harmonic Drive — A harmonic reducer gives minimal backlash, so motion stays smooth and precise.
  • Working area: 9.2 cm (diameter) × 24 cm (length) — The workpiece rotates about its axis, so the tool reaches every side of a cylindrical part within these limits.
  • Workpiece materials: Wood, plastic and non-ferrous metal are machined with one module, so the result is not limited by material, as it is in 3D printing.
  • Homing and work coordinates: The upgraded version supports 4th-axis homing (returning the axis to its zero position) and work coordinate setting. This way, every job starts from a known reference point.
  • CAM software choice: 4-axis toolpaths are prepared in MakeraCAM, or in Fusion 360 or VCarve, so work can continue in a familiar environment.

Machining with the 4th Axis Module

The fourth axis adds workpiece rotation to the machine's three axes. Carvera 4th Axis Module Harmonic Drive rotates the workpiece during cutting. As a result, the machine can process cylindrical, double-sided and complex 3D shapes.

During simultaneous machining, the tool and the workpiece move together. This produces real three-dimensional models, comparable to those a 3D printer makes.

Carved samples made with the rotary module are shown below.

Precision and construction

The precision of 4-axis machining is determined by the drive mechanics, not only by software settings. For this reason, the module has a Harmonic Drive reducer.

Harmonic reducer

A harmonic reducer (strain wave gear) gives minimal backlash — the play that appears in a gear train when the direction of rotation changes. As a result, the workpiece turns smoothly, with no noticeable reverse travel.

The compact design preserves smooth, precise motion. This motion is needed for complex machining that demands high repeatability and fine detail.

The harmonic reducer assembly of the module is shown in the image below.

Fourth-axis harmonic drive: The 3D render shows the harmonic drive of the fourth-axis module: a metal flange with mounting holes, a ball bearing assembly inside and a central opening for the shaft.

Drive and speed

The module is driven by a Nema17 stepper motor (a motor that turns the shaft in fixed angular steps). It rotates the axis at speeds of up to 2,400 °/min. This speed determines how quickly the workpiece changes position between passes.

Setup automation

Automatic tool change, automatic probing and an anchor-based coordinate system work together. As a result, setting up a 4-axis job in the software is as simple as for three axes. The operator defines the job parameters, and the machine does the rest.

The module holds the workpiece while a tablet running the machining software stands beside it, as shown below.

Software

4-axis CAM programming (preparing tool motion paths) is often a complex task. MakeraCAM simplifies it with intuitive tools for four axes.

The program converts 3D models into machine-ready G-code (a set of commands for the machine). This allows projects to be created quickly and efficiently.

In the MakeraCAM window shown below, a 3D model is placed in the workpiece together with toolpath lines.

Applications

Carvera 4th Axis Module Harmonic Drive is used wherever the workpiece must rotate during cutting.

  • Figurines and busts: The module rotates the workpiece during cutting, so the tool approaches the model from all sides and shapes its three-dimensional form.
  • Relief columns and cylindrical parts: MakeraCAM toolpaths wrap around a cylindrical workpiece, while the diameter and length of the working area set the permissible part size.
  • Double-sided parts: Rotation exposes both sides of the part to the tool, and support for 4th-axis homing and work coordinates helps tie the job to the workpiece.
  • Fine detail and repeatable jobs: A reducer with minimal backlash and a small rotation error suits complex machining that demands high repeatability and fine detail.
  • Artistic machining: Simultaneous four-axis machining makes it possible to produce realistic items from wood, plastic or metal.
