Bambu Lab AMS — automatic material system for multicolour 3D printing, designed to manage up to four filaments simultaneously. This device changes material autonomously during the printing process. Its advanced mechanism eliminates plastic waste and ensures continuous production without requiring manual intervention.
Main features and advantages
- Loading capacity: 4 spools — Allows multiple colours or support materials to be loaded in a single work session.
- Maximum expansion: 16 colours — Achieves superior aesthetic versatility by connecting four units via a dedicated hub.
- Internal processing: 32-bit MCU — Instantly identifies mechanical resistance and pauses extrusion to prevent part failures.
- Uninterrupted transition: The backup function automatically replaces exhausted filament to keep the machine running continuously.
- Material protection: The airtight compartment with desiccant blocks external humidity to preserve the integrity of the polymers.
- Optimised configuration: The built-in reader automatically synchronises the thermal parameters of original materials with the slicing software.
Operating principle and automation
Colour comes to life thanks to the integration of this advanced module into the additive manufacturing workflow. This equipment offers the freedom to combine different materials in the same model, greatly facilitating the creation of complex parts with detailed aesthetics.
The use of soluble or removable filaments dramatically simplifies the removal of supports in intricate geometries. In addition, the automated switch to a secondary channel ensures uninterrupted production that significantly reduces thermoplastic material waste.
Intelligent filament management
The backup material function provides total peace of mind during long printing cycles. If a spool runs out while the operator is absent, the device immediately loads the next available option, preventing loss of work and improving overall efficiency.
Equipped with a 32-bit microcontroller, sensor arrays and precision actuators, the equipment smoothly handles the entire loading and unloading path. This level of electronic intelligence enables autonomous resolution of common issues along the extrusion path.
If the filament encounters a mechanical obstacle at the print head due to tangling, the system quickly identifies the anomaly. At that precise moment, the machine safely stops its activity to prevent printing without material.
Material conservation and identification
To ensure the best quality of layer adhesion and prevent nozzle clogging, the housing features a fully airtight seal. An internal sensor constantly monitors the compartment's ambient humidity and issues an alert when it is necessary to replace the desiccant material.
Original spools include RFID labels that the internal reader scans to recognise the polymer and automatically apply the optimal temperature. This information is synchronised directly with Bambu Studio, while third-party consumables can be adjusted manually from the printer interface.
Each individual module houses four operating slots, but its architecture supports serial connection to expand the ecosystem's capabilities. By using a dedicated hub, users can install up to four simultaneous units and work with sixteen different colours.
Application areas
- Visual prototyping: Creation of vibrant conceptual models with up to 16 colours to accurately assess the aesthetic design of the final product.
- Complex geometries: Use of soluble or removable support filaments to manufacture intricate overhangs while maintaining a clean contact surface.
- Uninterrupted continuous production: Manufacturing of overnight cycles without operator supervision thanks to the automatic exchange of backup spools.
- Processing of hygroscopic polymers: Safe work with moisture-sensitive materials thanks to the airtight environment controlled by desiccants.
Accessories and compatibility
This module is designed exclusively to integrate directly with 3D printers within the Bambu Lab ecosystem. In addition, the equipment's architecture allows up to four units to be connected in parallel using a specific hub, significantly expanding the base station's feeding capacity.
