Formlabs Fuse X1 Build Unit — a wheeled, insulated print transport module. The module connects the Fuse X1 printer to the Fuse Sift X1 station. Blind power and data connectors eliminate manual cable connection. The insulated chamber allows parts to cool outside the printer while the next print is underway.
| Parameter | Your benefit |
|---|---|
| Compatible printer: Formlabs Fuse X1 | Guarantees direct integration into your existing Fuse X1 line without adapters or additional setup. |
| Compatible post-processing station: Formlabs Fuse Sift X1 | Allows the powder unit to be transferred directly for powder removal without intermediate part handling. |
| Connection type: Blind power and data connectors | Eliminates manual cable connection with every module swap. |
| Cooling method: Passive insulated chamber | Frees up the printer for the next job immediately after printing finishes. |
- Reduced downtime: while one module is cooling, the printer immediately begins a new sintering cycle.
- Automatic connection: blind connectors establish power and data transfer without operator involvement.
- Part quality protection: a stable thermal gradient inside the insulated walls prevents deformation of the powder unit during transport.
- Efficient use of floor space: the module moves directly to the Fuse Sift X1 station without a separate cooling zone.
How the setup works
In SLS manufacturing, the largest share of printer downtime is not caused by printing itself. The main cause is the mandatory cooling of the powder unit before it can be removed. On conventional SLS platforms, this cooling ties up the machine for several hours.
The Formlabs Fuse X1 Build Unit removes this phase from the printer's critical path. The entire build volume is designed as a removable, wheeled module, so cooling is completely separated from printing.
Once printing is complete, the module rolls out and a free module immediately rolls into its place. The Fuse X1 resumes with the next job within minutes. The extracted module, with its insulated walls, maintains a stable thermal gradient during transport. It heads directly to the Fuse Sift X1 station, where powder removal takes place.
Blind connectors: automatic connection
Blind connectors are what make the swappable architecture suitable for real production use. They self-align and connect the moment the module docks into the printer's bay. This establishes power and data transfer without any action from the operator.
Disconnection is just as effortless: the connectors disengage the moment the module rolls out. The operator never has to connect or disconnect cables in a hot working environment. It is this ergonomic transition that the Formlabs Fuse X1 Build Unit's architecture is built around.
Passive cooling and throughput
The insulated chamber is not merely a convenience — it's a throughput mechanism. SLS printing requires a defined cooling period so the powder unit solidifies evenly. The module's insulation maintains the required gradient while it moves across the shop floor to the Fuse Sift X1 station.
A facility with two modules and a single Fuse X1 printer can achieve near-continuous output. One module prints the next job while the other cools and undergoes powder removal at the Sift station.
Areas of application
- Continuous multi-shift production: Two Fuse X1 Build Units allow a single Fuse X1 printer to run almost without stopping: one module prints while the other cools and undergoes powder removal.
- Production facilities with limited floor space: Since no separate cooling station is required, the shop floor loses no space to additional equipment.
- Small-batch SLS production with frequent job changes: Swapping the module takes only minutes, so the printer moves quickly on to the next job without prolonged downtime.
- Transporting finished parts to post-processing: The module's insulated walls maintain a stable thermal gradient during transport to the Fuse Sift X1 station, protecting part quality.
- Ergonomic workflows without manual connection: Blind connectors eliminate manual cable connection, reducing physical strain on the operator in a hot environment.
Compatible devices and stations
The Formlabs Fuse X1 Build Unit is designed exclusively for the Fuse X1 ecosystem: the module docks with the Formlabs Fuse X1 printer and transfers the powder unit directly to the Formlabs Fuse Sift X1 post-processing station without additional adapters or intermediate equipment.
