The Unitree Go2 PRO with R3 controller is a professional quadruped robot for complex terrain. It offers autonomous navigation and a high load capacity with superior travel speed. Its 4D LiDAR system provides complete hemispherical coverage of the environment in real time. The package includes a dedicated tactile controller with haptic feedback and long wireless range.

SpecificationWhy it matters
Maximum speed: 3.5 m/sAllows long inspection routes to be completed in less time without losing stability.
Maximum joint torque: ~45 N.mGuarantees sufficient traction to overcome steep gradients without thermal limitation.
4D LiDAR field of view: 360°×96° hemisphericalPractically eliminates blind spots, including the upper zone needed to climb stairs reliably.
R3 controller battery life: 5 hCovers a full day of fieldwork without needing to recharge.
  • Motorised retractable strap: adjusts tension programmatically, making it practical to carry objects through corridors and workspaces.
  • ISS 2.0 intelligent side-following: locates and follows a designated person up to 30 m away, with positioning accuracy 50% higher than the previous generation.
  • Rage Mode: unlocks the full potential of the joint actuators for faster direction changes and stable gait on loose surfaces.
  • 4G eSIM connectivity with GPS: enables teleoperation via a cellular link in areas without Wi-Fi coverage, complemented by dual-band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

All-terrain aluminium alloy frame

The robot combines an aluminium alloy structure with high-strength technical plastics. It weighs around 15 kg with the battery installed and supports loads of up to 8 kg (approximate maximum of 10 kg). Twelve aluminium joint motors drive the four legs, each with internal circuit routing and heat-pipe dissipation, which extends operation under load and protects the wiring against impacts.

The image below shows the robot balanced on uneven rock formations over water, a demonstration of full-body stability control on terrain that wheeled or tracked robots cannot reach.

The motorised, self-tensioning retractable strap adjusts tension programmatically, turning object-carrying tasks — such as moving a package down a corridor — into something genuinely practical.

The visual summary below covers the platform's main sensor, power and structural components, as a reference before the detailed specification tables.

4D LiDAR L2: hemispherical spatial coverage

360°×96° omnidirectional scanning

The robot comes with Unitree's proprietary 4D LiDAR L2 as standard. The term "4D" refers to the inclusion of intensity data alongside the X, Y, Z coordinates, which improves object classification compared with a conventional 3D point cloud. The sensor covers 360° horizontal by 96° vertical with a minimum detection distance of 0.05 m, leaving the surrounding area practically free of blind spots and enabling smooth obstacle avoidance even at maximum speed.

The close-up below shows the wide-angle camera and front lamp assembly that complement the LiDAR in the front perception stack.

3D mapping and autonomous route following

Together with the Unitree Go app, the robot builds a dense point cloud map of the area it has covered. The user defines a route of waypoints and the robot follows it autonomously, recalculating in real time when it encounters new obstacles, which is useful for repeated inspection routes and topographic surveys.

The visualisation below, captured from the app during an active mapping session, shows the level of environmental detail the LiDAR resolves at short range.

Locomotion and Rage Mode

The robot reaches a sustained speed of 3.5 m/s on flat ground, climbs slopes of up to 40° and manages vertical step drops of approximately 16 cm. Each of the twelve joint motors delivers a peak torque of ~45 N.m, a 30% improvement over the previous generation thanks to internal circuit routing and heat-pipe cooling.

Rage Mode unlocks the full potential of the actuators: faster direction changes, more aggressive terrain response and stable gait on gravel and loose surfaces. It is activated from the Unitree Go app or via commands on the R3 controller.

ISS 2.0: intelligent side-following

The Intelligent Side-Following System 2.0 uses a wireless vector positioning module to track a designated person up to 30 m away, autonomously avoiding obstacles. Positioning accuracy has improved by 50% compared with the first generation, which is useful in environments where GPS alone is insufficient, such as covered walkways or indoor-outdoor transitions. The obstacle avoidance strategy is tuned to operate safely alongside pedestrians.

The image below visualises the active ISS 2.0 scanning overlay during a tracking operation in a park setting, with the LiDAR-generated terrain model updating continuously.

Voice, connectivity and smart interaction

The built-in voice function covers offline commands, real-time intercom communication between operator and robot, and music playback through the built-in 3 W speaker. The integrated 4G eSIM module, with GPS, enables teleoperation via a cellular link anywhere with network coverage, useful for outdoor deployments without Wi-Fi infrastructure.

The connectivity layers include dual-band Wi-Fi 6 for high-bandwidth local control, Bluetooth 5.2 for proximity pairing, and the 4G module for wide-area operations. Firmware updates install automatically (OTA) via any available connection.

Regional note: the 4G function on the version for non-mainland-China markets supports 43 European countries; Ukraine is excluded from that list. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 are not affected.

The photograph below shows a user interacting at close range with the robot indoors, which responds to gesture and proximity inputs with natural postural adjustments.

Expert verdict: the package combines sufficient load capacity and sensory fidelity for professional inspection with viable access for university robotics laboratories. The 4D LiDAR L2 is the specification that makes the difference, as its 96° vertical coverage eliminates the upper blind spot that makes stair navigation reliable. Including the R3 controller in the package brings joystick precision and haptic feedback that a touchscreen cannot replicate. When activating Rage Mode for the first time, it is advisable to have at least 3 m of clear space, as the gait's response time tends to surprise first-time operators.

R3 controller: tactile command at 100 m

The Unitree R3 is the latest dedicated controller in the Unitree ecosystem, replacing the R1 since December 2024. It houses the smartphone in a central mount, combining the Unitree Go app interface with physical joystick and button control in a single unit: full on-screen telemetry and 18 physical inputs (2 joysticks + 12 buttons + 4 shoulder buttons) for latency-free motion control.

The image below shows the controller in active use, with the app displaying the robot's live camera feed and the mode-selection interface.

Compact form factor with retractable storage

At 216.43 × 100 × 41.42 mm and 300 g, the controller fits in a jacket pocket or a field bag. The two joystick sticks are removable and stow away in a slot in the controller body itself. The 5 h battery life from a 780 mAh battery covers a day in the field on a single charge, and the wireless transmission link operates reliably beyond 100 m in open environments, with Bluetooth as a backup channel.

The infographic below summarises the controller's main dimensions, its 5-hour battery life and the joystick's sliding storage mechanism.

Dual haptic feedback

Both grips house independent vibration motors and a buzzer provides audible alerts, making the R3 the first Unitree controller with full dual haptic feedback. When a force event occurs — a collision, fall recovery or joint range limit — the tactile response is transmitted to the grip in real time. Users switch between vibration and sound with the F3 button, or disable feedback with F1.

The render below reveals the two sets of internal vibration motors and the contact architecture inside the right grip.

Compatibility across the Unitree range

The R3 controller is compatible with the entire Unitree range — Go2, G1, H1, B2 and future platforms — and transfers between devices after a new pairing in the Unitree Go app.

Technical tip: when calibrating the joysticks after the first pairing, press F1 and F3 together without touching the sticks to enter calibration mode (continuous beep at 1 Hz); rotate both sticks to their full travel several times and confirm with F3. Skipping this step can cause slow drift in standing balance mode. Hold F1 during shutdown so the setting is retained.
