The EinStar combines infrared VCSEL structured light with an integrated RGB camera to capture both geometry and true colour textures. Structured infrared capture technology
The EinStar employs three infrared structured light VCSEL projectors that penetrate dark, bright and reflective surfaces where visible light scanners fail. This approach generates dense point clouds with configurable resolution from 0.1 to 3 mm: 0.1 mm for small parts with complex geometry; 0.2 mm for an optimal balance on medium-sized objects; higher resolutions for fast capture of large volumes.
The depth of field from 160 to 1,400 mm and maximum field of 434 × 379 mm at the optimal working distance of 400 mm allow digitisation of everything from small industrial components to sculptures or body panels without repositioning the equipment. For transparent or extremely reflective materials, the manual recommends applying matte spray or placing reflective adhesive markers.
Safe scanning for people and capture of fine features
The EinStar is classified as a Class 1 laser product, the safest category of infrared emission. It does not emit visible projector light during scanning, making it a comfortable tool for digitising people without the need to close their eyes or wear protective eyewear.
Hair Mode allows sufficient capture of hair data, improving model integrity in portrait scans. This function is especially useful for medical, orthopaedic and animation applications requiring complete head reconstructions. Note that this mode can slightly increase data noise, so a subsequent cleaning step is recommended.
Stable outdoor performance
The combination of three IR VCSEL projectors, two stereo depth cameras and an RGB camera allows the EinStar to maintain precise tracking and clean data outside the laboratory. Infrared technology minimises interference from ambient sunlight, unlike scanners that rely on projected visible light. Scans of architectural heritage, monuments or vehicles in outdoor car parks are viable without additional configuration.
Intelligent alignment and robust tracking
The scanner offers four alignment modes that adapt to each type of surface. Feature mode automatically recognises shapes and edges, suitable for most objects with varied geometry. Texture mode uses RGB camera colour data to align on surfaces with distinctive visual patterns. Hybrid mode combines geometry, texture and markers for maximum robustness in complex scenes. Global Markers mode aligns exclusively using reflective adhesive markers, recommended for parts with little geometric or colour variation.
The intelligent tracking algorithm detects loss of reference and allows position recovery without restarting the scan thanks to the Data Rewind function, which prevents loss of all work performed in the event of momentary misalignment.
EXStar software: real-time quality indicator
The EXStar program, compatible with Windows 10/11 and macOS 13.0 or later, guides the user with a colour-coded data quality indicator: green signals adequate coverage, red indicates areas requiring more passes. After capture, it offers mesh editing tools (automatic or manual hole filling, smoothing and simplification), dimensional measurement and direct export.
Export formats include OBJ, STL, PLY, 3MF and P3, ensuring compatibility with most CAD design programs, 3D printing programs and visualisation platforms. Models can be shared with one click on Sketchfab or SHINING 3D Digital Cloud.
