Unfold, Click, Engrave: Ready in Under a Minute
Most desktop laser engravers demand assembly time, level-surface calibration, and a permanent footprint on a workbench. The R1 dismantles every one of those requirements. It ships folded — a flat rectangular slab measuring 272 × 250 × 140 mm that slips into a bag — and deploys to a fully operational engraving chamber by unfolding the lid and securing the laser module with a single hand screw. No tools, no calibration routine, no software installation before the first job.
The four-step assembly diagram below captures the complete unfolding sequence, from the closed transport form factor through to the final operational position ready for engraving.
Compact When Stored, Full-Sized When Working
The R1 chassis is fabricated from 92% recycled aluminium, delivering structural rigidity sufficient for consistent XY-axis repeatability while keeping net weight at just 2.4 kg. When folded, the machine measures 272 × 250 × 140 mm; once the lid deploys to its operating position, height extends to 218 mm as the enclosed chamber forms around the work area. The footprint never changes — the same drawer, bag pocket, or shelf works for both storage and transport.
The dimension diagram below confirms the machine measurements in both states, making storage planning straightforward before purchase.
Class 1 Laser Safety: Six Independent Protection Layers
Class 1 is the highest consumer laser safety classification — it means the enclosure fully contains the beam under all normal operating conditions, so no protective eyewear is required and no exclusion zones are needed on a worktable. For the R1, that certification rests on six independent safety mechanisms layered across both hardware and firmware.
What Each Safety Layer Does
The tilt detection auto-stop halts the laser the moment the machine is knocked sideways — particularly relevant for outdoor or unstable-surface use. USB lock protection prevents the machine from firing unless the physical USB key is present. Auto-stop on cover open cuts laser power instantly when the lid or front amber shield is lifted mid-job. Exposure duration detection limits continuous laser-on time, acting as a firmware firebreak against thermal runaway in the workpiece. The watchdog timer provides an independent hardware circuit that stops the laser if the main controller becomes unresponsive. Together, these layers make the R1 appropriate for supervised family use, classroom environments, and shared creative spaces — not merely compliant on paper.
LU3-5B Laser Module: 0.025 mm Spot in a 30 × 30 mm Housing
The included LU3-5B module fires at 450±20 nm with a focal spot of 0.025 mm × 0.11 mm at a focal distance of 60 mm. That sub-millimetre spot width enables clean fine-line work on leather and precise edge definition when cutting dark acrylic. The module draws power at 24 V / 2 A directly from the machine's internal bus and carries a rated lifespan exceeding 10,000 hours — sufficient for years of regular hobbyist or light-commercial use.
The standalone module photograph below shows the LU3-5B's black anodised housing, integrated fan assembly on top, and the red-tinted optical element window that identifies the 5 W diode array inside.
At just 83 mm tall and 30 × 30 mm in cross-section, the LU3-5B mounts inside the R1's compact chamber without consuming any of the usable working area. The dimension chart below shows both the module profile view and the compact square cross-section from the top-down fan perspective.
5 W Blue Light: Engrave 20+ Materials, Cut 11+
Blue-wavelength diode lasers interact primarily with surface pigmentation and organic molecular bonds, which is why wood, leather, fabric, bamboo, and dark-coloured acrylic absorb the beam efficiently while bare reflective metals largely pass the energy through. The 5,000 mm/min maximum speed means a production run of personalised wood coasters or leather patches completes in a single session. Cutting thinner substrates — paper, thin MDF, dark acrylic, PVC — is equally achievable by adjusting pass count and feed rate downward.
The sample collage below shows representative 5 W blue-light results across wood, leather, fabric, MDF, and acrylic: a detailed eagle motif on wood, leather pendants, a butterfly acrylic cutout, personalised pet ID tags, an engraved leather belt, and a set of cut wooden alphabet letters.
Two Laser Modules, One Machine: 300+ Compatible Materials
The R1 is built around a swappable module architecture. The included 5 W LU3-5B (blue, 450 nm) handles all non-metallic substrates. The optional 1.3 W LR4-1A (infrared, 1064 nm) unlocks direct engraving on bare metals — gold and silver jewellery, watch case backs, stainless steel rings, titanium surfaces, and anodised aluminium keychains. Both modules share the same mounting interface, so swapping takes under two minutes with the included hand screw. Maximum working area with the IR module is 100 mm × 80 mm.
The comparative material chart below shows side-by-side what each module achieves — IR module metal results on the top row, blue-light non-metal results on the bottom row.
From Idea to Engraving — All in One App
Every creative workflow on the R1 runs through a single mobile application. The built-in editor provides text input across 19+ fonts in multiple languages, shape drawing tools, a design template library, and a snap-to-engrave photo mode that converts a smartphone photo into a job-ready design with one tap. File transfer operates over WiFi with both online and offline modes supported. For production-focused users, the quick custom text mode eliminates the design stage entirely — type the text, set position, start the job.
The image below shows the white Ortur R1 on a desk alongside a smartphone displaying the Ortur app's device-pairing screen — a reminder of how short the path from phone to finished engraving actually is.
Take It Anywhere: 2.4 kg, Handle Included
The R1's built-in carry handle and 2.4 kg net weight make it genuinely portable — not merely "portable" as a category label for a machine that never leaves the workshop. The outdoor photograph below shows it fully operational on a folding camp table, amber viewing cover filtering the beam and providing visual feedback on the active job simultaneously. No darkened room required, no dedicated ventilation needed for the standard light-duty material set.
Creative at Home — For Everyone in the Family
The enclosed chamber and Class 1 safety rating place the R1 in a small category of laser tools that are genuinely suitable for supervised family use. The mobile app's drawing canvas allows children to sketch on a tablet and send their design directly to the machine, converting an original drawing into a laser-engraved keepsake without any intermediate file conversion step. The image below captures this dynamic precisely: a child drawing on a tablet while the R1 engraves on the same table — a direct pipeline from digital imagination to physical output.
The feature overview infographic below brings together the six core propositions of the R1 platform — instant setup, outdoor portability, dual laser capability, Class 1 certification, rapid text personalisation, and family-accessible operation — in a single compact visual reference.
Gift-Ready, Right Out of the Box
The R1 ships in retail packaging that doubles as a gift box — carry handle attached, presentation-ready on arrival. Available in two colour finishes, misty blue-orange and white, with a three-colour LED status indicator that keeps the operator informed at a glance during any active job. With its instant-setup workflow, beginner-friendly app, and gift-ready packaging, the R1 has become a considered gifting choice for makers, hobbyists, and personalisation entrepreneurs.

How to Set Up the Ortur R1 for First Use
This procedure covers unboxing, unfolding, laser module installation, focus setting, and first app connection for the Ortur R1 5W laser engraver.
Step 1: Remove and Place the Machine
Lift the Ortur R1 from its retail packaging by the built-in carry handle. The machine ships fully folded in a flat rectangular form. Set it on a stable, level surface and remove all protective packaging inserts and accessory bags.
Step 2: Unfold the Machine
Release the side latch holding the lid in its folded position. Lift the lid upward until it locks in the vertical operating position. Pull the front amber viewing shield forward and downward until it snaps into its operating position. The work chamber is now open and ready for module installation.
Step 3: Install the LU3-5B Laser Module
Slide the LU3-5B module into the mount inside the work chamber, aligning it with the guide rails. Secure it using the included hand screw — finger-tight only; do not over-torque. Connect the module cable to the machine's internal port if your unit includes a separate module cable.
Step 4: Set Focus with the Focus Plate
Place the included focus plate flat on your test workpiece. Slide the laser module downward until it rests lightly on the focus plate surface, then tighten the hand screw to lock the position. Remove the focus plate before starting any job. This sets the correct 60 mm focal distance for optimal spot size and engraving quality.
Step 5: Connect the App and Run a Test Job
Insert the USB key to activate the USB lock safety mechanism. Connect the 24 V / 2 A power adapter. Download the Ortur app on your iOS or Android device, add the R1 as a new device over WiFi, and select one of the built-in test templates. Place the included test wood chip inside the work chamber, close the lid and amber shield, and start the job to verify machine operation before running any custom work.
What is the maximum working area of the Ortur R1?
