Powder for SLS (Selective Laser Sintering)
SLS powder is composed of high-quality thermoplastic materials, primarily nylons (Nylon 12, PA 11, TPU), used in 3D printing to create functional prototypes and high-strength end-use parts. The powder acts simultaneously as a build material and as a natural support, allowing complex geometries to be printed without the need for additional support structures.
Main types and characteristics of powders
- Nylon 12 (PA12): the most popular material, recognised for its robustness and versatility in the manufacture of functional components.
- Nylon 11 (PA11): more flexible and with greater impact resistance than PA12, as well as being a sustainable, bio-based option.
- TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane): ideal for the production of flexible parts with elastic properties similar to rubber.
- Specialised powders: polypropylene (PP) for excellent chemical resistance and materials certified for food contact (such as iglidur® i6-BLUE).
Usage considerations
- Process
- The laser sinters the powder layer by layer. The unused material acts as a support block (known as a "cake") that holds the model in place throughout the entire printing process.
- Recycling
- Surplus powder can be sieved and blended with virgin material (a regeneration or refresh process), which significantly optimises production costs.
